Jason Garrett May Need Playoff Run To Ensure He’s Back With Cowboys In 2020

According to Jason La Canfora, while Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has said current HC Jason Garrett is safe in 2019, Jones has high expectations for this team and could make a coaching change after the season if Dallas underperforms.

Garrett is coaching out the last year of his deal in 2019 without an extension. Jones has said publicly and privately he expects this Dallas team to contend for a Super Bowl and at least make a deep run into the playoffs. If the Cowboys fail to meet that bar, it could cost Garrett his job.

La Canfora adds that if Jones does end up making a coaching change, he’s intrigued by Oklahoma HC Lincoln Riley. While Riley has one of the best jobs in college football, he reportedly will be considering the right job openings in the 2020 NFL coaching cycle and Dallas would fit the bill.

The Cowboys are currently 3-2 after losing two games straight against the Saints and Packers.

Garrett, 52, began his NFL coaching career with the Dolphins back in 2005 as their quarterbacks coach. After two years in Miami, the Cowboys hired him as their offensive coordinator and he eventually worked his way up to head coach.

Over the course of his eight years in charge of the Cowboys, Garrett has led the team to a record of 70-58 (54.7 percent), which includes three playoff appearances.

We’ll have more regarding Garrett as the news is available.
