Jason Witten Still Hoping To Be Back With Cowboys

Cowboys impending free-agent TE Jason Witten said he is still hopeful to re-sign with Dallas this offseason, but he understands it’s possible he may have to continue this career with another team.

“Well, it’s taken a lot longer than I had hoped for, but I think obviously with so many changes happening inside the [Cowboys’] building, just working through that,” Witten said, via Pro Football Talk.  “I met with Mike [McCarthy] early on after he got the job. We had a really good visit. Since then, he’s been putting together his staff. I’ve had constant communication with Stephen [Jones] and Jerry [Jones] along the way. So I think it’s my hope — I think our hope — to kind of have those talks very soon after the Combine ends and before free agency. I want to play. I think I want to explore that. I think it’s the right fit in the role, and I feel like I still have something to give. I’ve been on the other side of that and made the decision to retire.

“I just think, yeah, coaching is in my future, but right now, I want to play while I can. We’ll see where that takes place. Of course, I want that to be with the Dallas Cowboys. I’ll always be a Dallas Cowboy. But I also understand that, with all the changes, I may have to go somewhere else.”

Witten wants to bring a Championship to Dallas and believes the team is close.

“I hope that it’s here just because there’s nothing I want more than to bring a championship here,” Witten said. “I think this team is close. I think it really has the makeup to do some special things.”

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported back in January that Witten possibly joining Jason Garrett with the Giants is something to keep an eye on this offseason.

Witten, 37, is a former third-round pick of the Cowboys back in 2003. He was in the second year of his five-year, $29.6 million contract and set to make a base salary of $5.75 million for the 2018 season when he announced his retirement from the NFL back in May of last year.

ESPN later hired Witten as a broadcast analyst for “Monday Night Football” and the Cowboys placed him on the reserve/retired list. After one year out of football, Witten returned to the Cowboys for the 2019 season.

Witten will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason.

In 2019, Witten appeared in all 16 games for the Cowboys and caught 63 passes for 529 yards receiving and four touchdowns.
