Jets Cancel Workouts For QBs Tyler Thigpen & Rex Grossman, Plan To Open Preseason With Players On Roster

Update:

Diana Marie Russini reports that the JetsĀ “reached out” and planned to work out free agent QBs Tyler Thigpen and Rex Grossman on Friday, but canceled both tryouts shortly afterwards.

One member of the Jets’ staff said that the team will enter the preseason opener “with the 3 arms that we have,” in Ryan Fitzpatrick, Bryce Petty, and Jake Heaps.

Josina Anderson reports that the Jets have “no imminent plan” to work out QBs Tyler Thigpen or Rex Grossman.

Anderson adds thatĀ herĀ source within the Jets says the team’s current plan is to enter the preseason openerĀ “with the 3 arms that we have.

  • Diana Marie Russini reports that the Jets will hostĀ QB Tyler ThigpenĀ for a workout onĀ Friday.
  • Jason La Canfora adds that QB Rex Grossman will also be worked out by the Jets on Friday.

Albert Breer mentions that the Jets options at quarterback could include signing a free agent likeĀ Matt Flynn, Rex Grossman, and Tyler Thigpen or attempt to coax either Jason Campbell orĀ Kyle Orton out of retirement.

Although, Breer adds that the Jets aren’t considering Michael Vick at this point in time.

Rand Getlin of NFL Media reports that the Jets have also reached out to veteran QB Rex Grossman.

However, Grossman is dealing with an injury that he sustained during training and will need another few weeks to be ready.

Grossman previously found interest from the Browns several months ago, but ultimately passed on the opportunity.

According to Benjamin Allbright, the Jets have made aĀ preliminary inquiry into signing free agent QB Tyler Thigpen now that starting QB Geno Smith is out 6-10 weeks with a broken jaw.

  • Manish Mehta also reported that the Jets are inĀ the preliminary stage of signing a veteran quarterback.

As of now, Ryan Fitzpatrick will take over as the team’s No. 1 quarterback, but there is likely concern about the team’s depth at the position with rookieĀ Bryce Petty andĀ Jake Heaps behindĀ Fitzpatrick.

In fact, a Jets’ source tells Jeff Darlington thatĀ Petty is not ready — “not even close” — to assume starting role.

Thigpen, 31, is a former seventh-round pick of the VikingsĀ back in 2007. He lasted just a few months in Minnesota before he was waived and later claimed by the Chiefs.

Since the,Ā Thigpen has played for the Dolphins, Bills and Browns, but hasn’t appeared in an NFL game since the 2012 season.

For what it’s worth, other available quarterbacks includeĀ Michael Vick, Matt Flynn, Rex Grossman, Brady Quinn, John Skelton, Trent Edwards, and Caleb Hanie.
