Jets Place QB Geno Smith On Injured Reserve, Sign LB Taiwan Jones

The New York Jets announced Wednesday that they’ve placed QB Geno Smith on injured reserve with a torn ACL and signed LB Taiwan Jones to a contract.

The Jets will move forward with Ryan Fitzpatrick as their quarterback for the time being, but it’s possible that we’ll see Bryce Petty under center at some point this season.

Smith, 26, is a former second-round pick of the Jets back in 2013. He’s currently in the final year of his four-year, $5.019 million contract and stands to make a base salary of $675,000 for the 2016 season before testing the open mark next year.

This season, Smith has appeared in two games and completed 8-of-14 passes (57.1 percent) for 126 yards, one touchdown and an interception.

Jones, 22, wound up signing on with the Jets as an undrafted free agent out of Michigan State back in May of last year. He was, unfortunately, unable to make the 53-man roster coming out of the preseason but was later signed to the team’s practice squad.

Jones was once again cut loose coming out of the preseason a few months ago but was brought in for a workout on Tuesday.

Jones has yet to appear in an NFL game.
