Jets Reached Out DE Osi Umenyiora Yesterday, Didn’t Make Him An Offer

Mike Garafolo of FOX Sports reports that the Jets reached out recently retired DE Osi Umenyiora to see if he was really set on calling it a career.

  • According to Garafolo, the Jets did not extend Umenyiora a contract offer.
  • Garafolo isn’t surprised that the Jets checked in on Umenyiora, given that they’re dealing with some injuries on defense.

Earlier in the offseason, Umenyiora actually stopped by and visited with the team, but it wasn’t a formal visit.

Umenyiora held his retirement press conference on Wednesday and told reporters: “[E]ither I was going to play for the Giants or I wasn’t going to play at all.

Umenyiora, 33, is a former second round pick on Umenyiora back in 2003. He spent the first nine years of his NFL career with the Giants before departing in free agency.

He wound up playing out his two-year, $8.5 million contract with the Atlanta Falcons.

In 2014, Umenyiora appeared in all 16 games for the Falcons and recorded 12 tackles, 2.5 sacks, a fumble recovery for a touchdown and two pass defenses. Pro Football Focus had him rated as the N0. 22 defensive end in 4-3 defense out of 59 qualifying players, due to him being a decent pass-rusher.
