Jets Could Target Teddy Bridgewater If They Miss Out On Kirk Cousins?

Ralph Vacchiano of SNY.com, citing a team source, reports that Vikings free agent QB Teddy Bridgewater is on the Jets’ list of quarterback options this offseason, depending on what happens with their pursuit of Kirk Cousins.

According to Vacchiano, his source wouldn’t say if Bridgewater is “part of a Plan B, C or D.”

  • Adam Schefter reported over the weekend that “at least a handful” of NFL teams expressed interest in Bridgewater last week as a potential starting quarterback. Schefter adds that Bridgewater does have a market developing, despite the concerns about his knee.
  • Calvin Watkins mentioned that Bridgewater is looking for a one- or two-year deal this offseason with the hope that he can set himself up for a long-term contract extension down the road.
  • Rich Cimini also suggested the idea of the Jets pursuing Bridgewater.

There has been some question about Bridgewater’s free agent status, given that the Vikings could have had a case that his contract should have tolled for the 2018 season after spending the first six games of the season on the PUP list.

However, reports have said that Bridgewater will be a free agent in the coming weeks and Minnesota is not planning to contend that his contract should toll.

Bridgewater will be one of the most interesting free agents to watch, as he’s still a young quarterback who has shown some promise, but he suffered a very serious knee injury a few years ago that forced him to miss almost all of the past two seasons.

Bridgewater, 25, is a former first-round pick of the Vikings back in 2014. He’s currently in the final year of his four-year, $6,849,502 rookie contract and stands to make a base salary of $1,354,023 for the 2017 season.

The Vikings declined to pick up Bridgewater’s fifth-year option that would have cost them $12,198,000 million for the 2018 season. Bridgewater will now be an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his NFL career.

In 2017, Bridgewater appeared in one game for the Vikings and was 0-2 passing and threw an interception.
