49ers Officially Fire Jim Tomsula

Update:

The San Francisco 49ers have announced that Jim Tomsula has been relieved of his head coaching duties.

Jimmy has been a valuable member of the 49ers organization for the last nine years,” said CEO Jed York. “We all know he is a man of high character, and his contributions on the field and in our community have always been greatly appreciated. This entire organization is proud and grateful to have worked so closely alongside Jimmy. We all wish him and his family great success in the future.”

Dianna Marie Russini of ESPN, citing multiple sources, reports that 49ers HC Jim Tomsula is meeting with team executives and the expectation is that the entire coaching staff will be fired.

Earlier in the day, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reported that the 49ers are expected to keep Trent Baalke in place as the team’s GM, but fire Tomsula, so this news shouldn’t come as a major surprise.

San Francisco managed to beat the Rams on Sunday, but the writing appears to be on the wall for Tomsula, who was hand picked to replace Jim Harbaugh, but lasted just a year.

The fact that the 49ers are reportedly prepared to fire the entire staff suggests that they could be preparing to make a run at a notable head coach.

There has already been talk that the 49ers could pursue Saints HC Sean Payton, should he be available for trade.

Florio suggested earlier that Chip Kelly could an intriguing possibility who could help them try to get Colin Kaepernick back on track.

Former 49ers offensive coordinator Mike Holmgren has continuously expressed interest in the job, and Florio believes he would at least give the fanbase a reason to think they’ll turn things around.

Tomsula led the 49ers to a record of 4-11 (31.3 percent) this season.
