Joe Tessitore & Booger McFarland Won’t Return To Monday Night Football Booth

Richard Deitsch of The Athletic reports that ESPN is replacing the “Monday Night Football” team of Joe Tessitore and Booger McFarland for the 2020 season.

According to Deitsch, plans to promote successors from within, but no decisions have been made at this point on who will be elevated to the Monday night booth.

Deitsch adds that both Tessitore and McFarland will remain in prominent roles at ESPN.

ESPN attempted to hire Peyton Manning and Tony Romo this offseason, but Manning declined to take the job and Romo re-signed with CBS.

They also showed some interest in Drew Brees and Philip Rivers. However, both opted to continue their NFL careers and Brees later agreed to join NBC once he’s ready to retire.

One report mentioned that ESPN explored the possibility of trading for long-time NBC broadcaster Al Michaels, but nothing ever came of the report.

Some names that have come up as potential internal options for ESPN include Steve Levy, Louis Riddick and Dan Orlovsky. One other possibility tossed out would be for ESPN to promote their college team of Chris Fowler and Kirk Herbstreit to the “Monday Night Football” booth.

Barry Jackson has confirmed that Levy getting serious consideration for the play-by-play role with Orlovsky and Riddick among potential analyst candidates. Although, Jackson says ESPN is no rush to make a decision.
