Johnny Manziel Signing Two-Year Deal With Hamilton Tiger-Cats

Former Browns QB Johnny Manziel announced via Barstool Sports that he’s signing a two-year contract with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the CFL.

  • According to Jason La Canfora, Manziel’s contract with the Tiger-Cats is worth a base value of $122,000 and includes a $10,000 signing bonus for the 2018 season.
  • La Canfora adds that Manziel also receives an $18,000 housing stipend, $10,000 bonuses for being active for 6, 10 and 14 games and another $120,000 if he plays half of the team’s snaps.
  • On March 1 of next year, Manziel is owed a $75,000 offseason bonus and he can make $202,000 base salary with the same incentives.
  • Manziels’ two-year contract is a binding deal and there is escape clause to allow him to return to the NFL before it’s up, per La Canfora.

Manziel had been trying to land an offer from an NFL team and even took part in some college Pro Days to get in front of NFL scouts. He also played in a football game for the first time in over two years last month as part of The Spring League and finished the game completing 9 of 15 pass attempts for 82 yards and a touchdown.

However, it looks like the CFL proved to be his best option in terms of rehabilitating his football career.

Manziel, 25, is a former first-round pick of the Browns back in 2014. He was in the second year of his four-year, $8,247,250 rookie contract when the Browns cut him loose at the start of the 2016 league year.

Manziel received a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s policy on recreational drug and wound up sitting out the 2016 and 2017 seasons.

In 2015, Manziel appeared in nine games and thrown for 1,500 yards while completing 57.8 percent of his passes to go along with seven touchdowns and five interceptions. Manziel also ran for 230 yards. Pro Football Focus had him rated as the No. 31 quarterback out of 36 qualifying players that year.
