Veteran QB Josh McCown said Friday at the Super Bowl that he would like to return to the Jets next year.
โItโs hard to say, โHey, I want to go somewhere elseโ after you had the best year of your career,โ McCown said, via the New York Post. โI liked being there and loved the organization and the guys in the locker room. I think there was a good foundation laid, something special and something that can be built. I understand and respect the evaluation process that has to take place and letโs see where that leads us. Who knows?โ
McCown added that he’d have no issues returning, even if the Jets used their first-round pick on a quarterback prospect.
โI know we have older quarterbacks around the league who are pushing the envelope, but the reality is none of us are going to play forever and you understand that. Iโve said it from Day 1, I really root for these guys being able to find that long-term answer at quarterback and want them to succeed,” McCown said. “If thatโs through the draft or thatโs through people already on the team if I can be a part of helping that, Iโd love to.โ
McCown’s 2017 season ended after he suffered a season-ending hand fracture that led to him being placed on injured reserve.
According to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, “multiple GMs” believe McCown could command as much asย $10 million or more next year, so it will be interesting to see if the Jets can reach his demands.
McCown, 38, is a former third-round pick of the Cardinals back in 2002. He played for several teams including the Lions, Raiders, Dolphins, Panthers, 49ers, Bears, Buccaneers and Browns before signing a one-year, $6 million contract with the Jets as an unrestricted free agent this offseason.
In 2017, McCown appeared in 12 games for the Jets and thrown for 2,880 yards while completing 67.8 percent of his passes to go along with 18 touchdowns and eight interceptions.ย Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 23 quarterback out of 40 qualifying players.
