Seahawks S Kam Chancellor A “Band-Aid” Deal To Get Him To Report To Camp

Update:

Josina Anderson of ESPN reports that Seahawks S Kam Chancellor is looking for a “better cash flow” over the next two years of his contract.

Anderson suggests that the Seahawks could convert the majority of Chancellor’s $9.65 million base salary over the next two years into a signing bonus and separating the payments to $3.5 million early on and another $3.5 million by October 1st.

Chancellor has $4.45 million of his $4.55 million base salary guaranteed for the 2015 season.

Sources tell Anderson that Chancellor is prepared to take his holdout potentially into the regular season if both sides can’t find middle ground.

Jason Cole of B/R reports that the Seahawks are unlikely to sign S Kam Chancellor to a new contract, unless it’s a “highly favorable” deal for Seattle that would keep him under team control for the foreseeable future.

According to Cole, the Seahawks and GM John Schneider are keeping negotiations with Chancellor “peaceful” for now.

Even so, Cole adds that there’s no indication that Seattle is willing to do anything substantial to get him to end his holdout and report to training camp. One such solution could be a “band-aid” deal much like what they did with RB Marshawn Lynch last year in which they moved money from the latter portion of the contract to this year.

Josina Anderson of ESPN is reporting that Seahawks S Kam Chancellor could potentially extend his into the regular season if the two sides can’t find any middle ground on a long-term extension.

Chancellor began holding out for a new deal a few weeks ago, and recent reports have said that DE Michael Bennett will be keeping a close eye on how the Seahawks handle this situation.

Seattle has already been forced to part ways with one veteran in DT Tony McDaniel after they locked up QB Russell Wilson and MLB Bobby Wagner to record setting deals. There’s also the issue of setting a precedent for future negotiations, as players would almost certainly use this against them if the decide to redo Chancellor’s deal after just two years.

Chancellor, 27, still has another three years remaining on his five-year, $29.323 million contract that included $17 million guaranteed. He stands to make base salaries of $4.55 million (2015), $5.1 million (2016), and $6.8 million (2017).

In 2014, Chancellor appeared in 14 games and recorded 78 tackles, one interceptions, a forced fumble and six pass defenses for the Seahawks. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 20 safety out of 87 qualifying players.
