Lions DE Cliff Avril Missing Start Of Offseason Program

Detroit Lions defensive end Cliff Avril will not participate in the Lions’ offseason workouts next week, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Avril was given the franchise tag by Detroit, but has yet to sign the tender, which is worth $10.6 million. Their offseason program begins on Monday, but Avril will be in town in case there is a breakthrough in negotiations.

Avril hopes that things can pick up this week. “I think we’re going to continue to try and get something done hopefully and we’ll see how it goes,” he said, adding “This whole thing, I just know I want to be out there, I want to play ball and we’ll see how it goes.”

The deadline for Avril and the Lions to get a long-term deal done is July 15. If an agreement cannot be reached, Avril will have to play next season on a one-year contract.
