Lions Place QB Matthew Stafford On Injured Reserve

The Detroit Lions announced Tuesday that they’ve officially placed QB Matthew Stafford on injured reserve, ending his 2019 season.

Stafford has been out for several weeks now with non-displaced fractures in the upper thoracic spine.

While Stafford had been holding out hope of returning this year, it doesn’t make a lot of sense for him to return to the lineup at this point in the season with nothing to play for and risk further injury.

Stafford, 31, is a former first-round pick of the Lions back in 2009. He was in the final year of his five-year, $76.5 million contract when he and the Lions agreed to a five-year, $135 million extension back in 2017.

Stafford stands to make base salaries of $13.5 million and $15 million over the next two years of the agreement.

In 2019, Stafford appeared in eight games and completed 64.3 percent of his passes for 2,499 yards, 19 touchdowns and five interceptions. He has also rushed for 66 yards.
