Lions Sign LB Jonathan Freeny

The Detroit Lions announced Monday that they’ve signed LB Jonathan Freeny to a contract.

Freeny met with the Lions a few weeks ago and reportedly had interest from the Saints as well. However, Freeny. has ties to new Lions HC Matt Patricia from their time together with the Patriots and it appears as though Detroit proved to be his best opportunity in the end.

Freeny, 28, originally signed on with the Dolphins as an undrafted free agent out of Rutgers back in 2011. He spent four years in Miami before signing on with the Patriots as an unrestricted free agent in 2015.

The Patriots signed him to a two-year contract extension coming out of the preseason in 2016 but elected to cut him loose coming out of the preseason last year.

Freeny has brief stints with the Ravens and Jaguars before catching on with the Saints to finish out the year.

In 2017, Freeny appeared in six games and recorded six tackles and no sacks for interceptions.
