Lovie Smith To Sit Out 2013 In The Hope of Securing A HC Job Next Year

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that former Bears head coach Lovie Smith expects to sit out the 2013 season and pursue a head coaching position next season.

This is somewhat interesting given that there are a few defensive coordinator jobs available including the Eagles and Saints and Smith is widely regarded as one of the best defensive coaches in the game. Both of those team’s are expected to implement 3-4 defensive schemes next season and Smith is known for Tampa-2 defense, so it’s not as though he would be a great fit for either team.

Smith interviewed for a number of jobs, but never emerged as a serious candidate for any of the available jobs. He’s a good enough coach that he should find interest next season, but it’s hard to say that for sure that he’ll end up with a head coaching job.
