NFC Notes: 49ers, Cardinals, Rams

49ers

49ers GM John Lynch was asked if his roster plans have to change because of a potentially altered salary cap and player opt-outs.

“We were set up with a really good roster, but we had set it up such that we really felt it was sustainable,” Lynch said, via Matt Barrows of The Athletic. “I think it’s still sustainable. We’re going to have to get creative, though, and we’ve got to figure some things out.”

  • Michael Silver mentions that while the opt-out deadline has passed and 49ers’ TE George Kittle, negotiations regarding a long-term extension continue.
  • Matt Barrows says that the deal for TE Jordan Reed hasn’t been made official and that he and DE Dion Jordan have to pass a physical as well as three COVID-19 tests before they can join the team.

Cardinals

Cardinals HC Kliff Kingsbury and LB Chandler Jones both had positive things to say about the offseason that QB Kyler Murray has been having.

“He’s been throwing with his dad since he could walk and so that continued and he’s been sharp so far in these walkthroughs,” Kingsbury said, via Howard Balzer of SI. “I think the mental side of it, the game is going to slow down tremendously, just his operation, his competence level, his leadership and those are all things even in the first couple of days of being around — and you can see he’s taken big steps and we just have to continue to take steps in the right direction.”

“He’s definitely a leader,” Jones said of Murray. “When he speaks, guys listen, even when he was a rookie. So, even going into his second year, I feel that’s going to even be more and I’m definitely looking forward to him to do that; to lead our offense to more wins. Kyler’s definitely bulked up. His arms and shoulders look a little bit bigger. That’s going to be good for him, especially in this league. There’s no quarterback that doesn’t go through games without getting sacked. That’s just the way it goes. He’s fast, but when you get a little bit more meat on your bones, you can take hits. So, that’s going to be good for him.”

Rams

Rams WR Robert Woods says there have been “a little bit of talks early on” with the team about an extension and he’s hoping to finish out his career in Los Angeles.

“You want to go in and get paid for what you’re worth — I think everyone feels that way,” Woods said, via the LATimes. “I’ve been working here for the Rams and want to be here for the rest of my career, keep playing here in L.A., home stadium. I want to get the job done and be here long-term.”
