Redskins HC Jay Gruden mentioned during a conference call on Friday that they will evaluate whether to shut lt Trent Williams and TE Jordan Reed down for the season.

โ€œI think if theyโ€™re good enough to go, they need to go,โ€ Gruden said, via the Washington Post. โ€œBut weโ€™ll see how theyโ€™re doing from a longevity standpoint. We obviously donโ€™t want to hurt anybodyโ€™s future and a chance for them to injury themselves long-term. But if itโ€™s just a nagging ankle sprain or something like that where the guys can play through it, then theyโ€™ll play through it. Weโ€™ve got to dress 46 guys out there, and weโ€™ll dress the healthiest guys we can.โ€

Williams may need to undergo surgery after the season, and Gruden explained that theyโ€™ll see how his timeline for the procedure will project before deciding anything.

โ€œLetโ€™s find out what the timeline is for the surgery โ€” if he has to have surgery number one, what type of surgery itโ€™s going to be and how long itโ€™s going to put him out,โ€ Gruden said. โ€œWeโ€™ll take all that and figure out what weโ€™re going to do with him. If heโ€™s good enough to finish the season, weโ€™ll finish out the season. We need him. Kirk [Cousins] needs him. Weโ€™ll go by what the doctors say, how Trent feels and make our decision with Trent.โ€

  • The New Orleans Saints officially ruled out TE Coby Fleener (concussion) and S Marcus Williams (groin) for Sundayโ€™s game against the Panthers.
