Bears

New Bears GM Ryan Poles had his heart set on what he viewed as a huge addition — a major multi-year deal for DT Larry Ogunjobi. However, a physical revealed an issue with Ogunjobi’s foot that was serious enough that Poles felt he had to back out of the deal, much to his regret.

“That hurt me. It really did,” he said via the Athletic’s Kevin Fishbain. “I think I have a pretty good level of empathy, so I just put myself in his shoes, and that’s a bad situation. It was really unfortunate that was like the first thing I’ve had to deal with. The only way I can describe it is, I think with anything in decision-making, there’s a business decision that has to be made, but there’s also your personal emotions that are in it as well. The business side was something I felt comfortable doing because of the information we received and what my job is, and that’s to protect the Bears and make sound decisions. It’s the personal side that was hard.”
