NFC Notes: Christian McCaffrey, Braden Fiske, 49ers, Cardinals, Rams

49ers

The 49ers picked up RB Kaelon Black in the third round of this year’s draft out of Indiana. Christian McCaffrey said he’s been impressed by Black in training camp, saying he looks more developed as a rookie than he did in back in 2017.

“He’s stacked, man. You can definitely see it. He’s… you can tell he’s played at a high level of football,” McCaffrey said, via NinersWire. “He’s played mature football. He’s, again, he’s made… I can’t say enough good. He’s exactly what you would want a rookie to come in and be like. And again, I think our whole running back room is great, and he complements it so well in the way he runs. I think when you look at him, his rookie year, and then you go look at me, my rookie year, they look very different in age.”

  • McCaffrey isn’t practicing on Monday with calf tightness, per Nick Wagoner.
  • San Francisco OC Klay Kubiak talked about McCaffrey’s workload and soreness: “Christian always kind of has his rep count in any camp. You guys are aware of the adjustments we’ve made to our schedule to kind of keep them from having too many off days. But in terms of his rep load, we’re right on track where we want to be. And he’s a veteran player, so you got to monitor him and get him ready for the first week… [We’re] just managing [him]. A little sore, but he’s doing fine. So just kind of managing him as we go.” (Wagoner)
  • 49ers CB Marques Sigle said he added eight to ten pounds to better deal with tight ends and take on blocks. (Barrows)

Cardinals

  • Cardinals GM Monti Ossenfort was asked if he expects to get a long-term deal done with WR Michael Wilson: “Expect? That’s a tough word… we want Michael here for a long time.” (Darren Urban)

Rams

Rams DL Braden Fiske gave his opinion on DE Myles Garrett after getting to line up with him on the defensive line in practice, seeing what he can do and attempting to build chemistry with his new teammate.

“Not all men are created equal, that’s for sure,” Fiske said, via the team’s website. “He’s a baller, no doubt. He’s getting a slide, there’s no doubt about that. Trying to work off him or vice versa, communicating. The biggest thing right now is working on our communication of how to rush together, how we’re going to attack certain looks. As all four, the certain looks that we’re going to get when he’s on the field, preparing for that and doing our best to work off each other. It’s been good so far though. I think we’re making strides.”
