NFC Notes: Cowboys, Eagles, Giants

Cowboys

  • Calvin Watkins reports that there is no deal in place for the Dallas Cowboys to sign free agent QB Jeff Driskel as of right now. Watkins adds that there’s more work to be done in terms of potentially adding Driskel.

Eagles

Eagles GM Howie Roseman responded to suggestions that he was using his own draft board in the 2021 NFL Draft, saying that HC Nick Sirianni, vice president of player personnel Andy Weidl, and advisor Tom Donahoe all operate with their own boards.

“That’s ridiculous,” Roseman said, via Tim McManus of ESPN. “Every single person on our staff has their own draft board. That’s how we write up reports. Nick [Sirianni] has his own draft board, [vice president of player personnel] Andy Weidl has his own draft board, Tom Donahoe has his own draft board, I have my own draft board. That’s how we rank players. That’s how our system is set up, to do that.”

Roseman added that there was a composite Eagles draft board and it was his job to reflect everyone’s preferences into their overall draft strategy.

“We have an Eagles draft board that reflects a lot of things, and my job is to bring them all together. My job is to get the coaches’ perspective, the scouts’ perspective, the medical perspective, the character perspective as we do this process. My job is to try to reflect all of that. I listen to everyone to try and make these decisions. And at the same time, someone may be unhappy because it may not be reflected accurately in all the information that I have that they may not have.”

Giants

  • According to Ryan Dunleavy, the Giants were interested in DB Jason McCourty prior to him signing a deal with the Dolphins on Thursday but instead elected to focus on third-round CB Aaron Robinson and sixth-round CB Rodarius Williams.
  • Jeremy Fowler reports that new Dolphins DB Jason McCourty was in talks with the Giants prior to signing his deal with Miami on Thursday.
  • However, New York’s defensive backfield picture became crowded after free agency and the draft and he felt he would have a better chance of having an impact in Miami, especially with his familiarity with Brian Flores system.
  • A number of executives tell the Athletic’s Mike Sando that the first-round pick the Giants got from the Bears to trade down has a decent chance of being in the top ten in 2022.
