NFC Notes: Cowboys, Eagles, Giants, Washington

Cowboys

  • Cowboys HC Mike McCarthy said on 105.3 The Fan on Friday that heโ€™s not in panic mode regarding LT Tyron Smithโ€˜s neck injury at this point: โ€œWeโ€™ll see how Tyron is. Iโ€™m not alarmed right now, but itโ€™s something that weโ€™re looking at. These are the experiences you need. Itโ€™s important for young players to play early in the season.โ€ (Dallas Morning News)
  • McCarthy also said of Smith: โ€œI know he wants to go. Heโ€™s a pro. Heโ€™s doing everything possible with the training staff. Weโ€™ll see.โ€ (Michael Gehken)
  • As for Cooper, McCarthy said he โ€œwent through the mock game and everything today. I donโ€™t foresee a setback there.โ€ (Michael Gehken)
  • Cowboys owner Jerry Jones made it sound like Smith and WR Amari Cooper (foot) will be game-time decisions on Sunday. (Jon Machota
  • Cooper said of his injury: โ€œItโ€™s a bruised foot. I hurt it in the game.โ€ Regarding whether it will keep him from playing this Sunday, Cooper responded: โ€œNo.โ€ (Michael Gehken)
  • QUESTIONABLE for Week 2: CB Anthony Brown (ribs), T Tyron Smith (neck)

Eagles

  • Eaglesโ€™ RT Lane Johnson on his surgically repaired ankle: โ€œIโ€™m ready to go. It probably wonโ€™t be 100 percent this Sunday, but it should improve as the season progresses.โ€ (Jeff McLane)
  • Eagles HC Doug Pederson said that Nate Herbig will continue to start at right guard for them. (Jeff McLane)
  • Eagles RB Miles Sanders said heโ€™s playing this week: โ€œIโ€™m 100 percent, ready to go.โ€ (Jimmy Kempski)
  • According to Sanders, he could have played last week, but they opted to be cautious with his hamstring issue: โ€œI could have played last week, but hamstrings are tricky.โ€ โ€ฆHe needed to be careful to avoid re-injury. โ€œWhatโ€™s important is Iโ€™m playing this week.โ€ (Zach Berman)
  • Eagles DL Brandon Graham has cleared the concussion protocol and as long as heโ€™s free up symptoms, heโ€™ll play in Week 2.
  • Zach Berman says thereโ€™s optimism that DE Derek Barnett will also make his debut.
  • Regarding the news that the Eagles are hosting free agent RB Devonta Freeman for a visit, Mike Garafolo reports that it doesnโ€™t sound like thereโ€™s anything agreed to yet and this could wind up being just a visit and workout in case they want to sign him at a later date.
  • OUT for Week 2: WR Alshon Jeffery (foot)
  • QUESTIONABLE for Week 2: DE Derek Barnett (hamstring), DE Brandon Graham (concussion)

Giants

Giants first-round OT Andrew Thomas said the coaching staff called out the offensive line unit for their play last weekend and theyโ€™re now redoubling their efforts to improve.

โ€œWe have a standard that we set ourselves,โ€ Thomas said, via Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post. โ€œIt wasnโ€™t up to par. Everyone that blocks on the offense, we have pride in being able to run the ball. Weโ€™ve been practicing hard to make sure that things like that donโ€™t happen again.โ€

  • Giants HC Joe Judge made it clear that they arenโ€™t given up on TE Evan Engram one bit in terms of being a complete tight end, including as a blocker. (Art Stapleton)
  • Judge praised Engram for going 100 mph in practice and called him โ€œan integral partโ€ of the Giantsโ€™ offense.
  • OUT for Week 2: S Adrian Colbert (quadricep)
  • QUESTIONABLE for Week 2: LB Carter Coughlin (hamstring), WR Golden Tate (hamstring)

Washington

An NFC scout tells Dan Graziano that the dominance of Washingtonโ€™s defensive line in Week 1 was an under-discussed topic the past week.

โ€œThey can bring them in waves,โ€ the scout said. โ€œThe talent they have, if you can keep everybody fresh, itโ€™s going to show up late in games.โ€
