NFC Notes: Cowboys, Packers, Saints, Drew Brees

Cowboys

Cowboys veteran TE Jason Witten said it would be “foolish” for him to get sensitive about Dallas drafting a young tight end, who could eventually replace him.

“They’ve got to find the best roster that they can do,” Witten said last week, via Todd Archer of ESPN.com. “It would be foolish to get sensitive and worry about that. You’ve got to be able to compete and play at a high level. I welcome that and certainly I would help that guy in any way and I think the most important thing is let’s make our football team better. I know Stephen and Jerry [Jones] and Will [McClay] and coach [Jason] Garrett, they’re doing everything they can to put us in position in free agency and the draft to do that. Tight end position may be one of those spots.

Packers

  • Rob Demovsky of ESPN writes that the Packers should could the same route as they did with Nick Perry when it comes to picking up CB Damarious Randall‘s fifth-year option.
  • Green Bay actually declined Perry’s option and then brought him back on a one-year, $5 million. Perry turned in an impressive 2016 season that culminated him securing a massive five-year, $60 million deal the following year.
  • Demovsky mentions that the Packers probably do not want to sever ties with Randall, but they likely don’t want to commit to paying him over $8 million for the 2019 season either.

Saints

  • Josh Katzenstein of the Times-Picayune writes that free agent QB Drew Brees has “incredible” leverage over the Saints in contract talks because of the dead money the team would carry if they can’t get a deal done by March 14.
  • Katzenstein explains that if New Orleans doesn’t sign Brees to an extension before March 14, their cap space would be reduced from $31.8 million down to $12 million.
  • Should the parties manage to get an agreement in place before they, Katzenstein fully expects the contract to include “shell” years much like his previous deal did to push some money down the road.
  • Katzenstein says that the Saints would like to sign Brees to a deal in the range of $20 million, but you could easily make the case that he should seek the $27 million per year Jimmy Garoppolo just got from the 49ers.
  • New Orleans is obviously looking to go year-to-year while Brees would like to get a multi-year deal and some security as part of this next contract.
  • We have Breesfeatured in our Top 100  – 2018 NFL Free Agents list.
