NFC Notes: Giants, Packers, Redskins

Giants

  • Giants new HC Pat Shurmur told reporters on Friday that he believes QB Eli Manning has โ€œyears leftโ€ in him: โ€œI think heโ€™s got years left. How much? I donโ€™t know. โ€ฆ Heโ€™s an outstanding player.โ€ (Ralph Vacchiano)
  • Shurmur confirmed that he plans to call plays for the Giants in 2018.
  • Shurmur referred to new DC James Bettcher as โ€œa rising star in this business.โ€ (Art Stapleton)
  • According to Shurmur, he and GM Dave Gettleman clicked during the interview process as soon as Gettleman told him โ€œIt starts with the offensive line.โ€ (Ralph Vacchiano)
  • Regarding WR Odell Beckham Jr, Shurmur said: โ€œI need to get to know him. I need to get to know what makes him tick, and I need to talk to him about what weโ€™re looking for from a guy who plays from the NY Giants.โ€ (Ralph Vacchiano)
  • Shurmur said that this is a โ€œclean slate dealโ€ when asked about Beckhamโ€™s behavior. (Dan Duggan)
  • Shurmur on QB Davis Webbโ€œWe thought he was a tremendous player. We thought he was a guy โ€ฆ who had a chance to be a starter someday.โ€ (Ralph Vacchiano)
  • Giants owner John Mara said of a possible extension for Beckham Jr: โ€œWeโ€™ll get something done at the appropriate time.โ€ (Art Stapleton)

Packers

Packers CB Kevin King finished out his rookie season on injured reserve and underwent left shoulder surgery.

However, GM Brian Gutekunst says they have no long-term concerns about Kingโ€˜s future, despite the shoulder issues heโ€™s dealt with dating back to college.

โ€œI wouldnโ€™t think so,โ€ Gutekunst said, via Michael Cohen of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. โ€œIt sounds like everything is going good. You never like to see that with young players, but yeah, I donโ€™t think so.

โ€œThese are young, healthy, high-level athletes. So I think hopefully โ€” knock on wood โ€” everything should be good there.โ€

Redskins

  • Rich Tandler of CSN Washington writes that the Redskins could once again show interest in DT Bennie Logan, who will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason.
  • The Redskins targeted Logan last year before he ultimately agreed to a one-year contract with the Chiefs.
  • If the Redskins look to the draft to address the defensive tackle position, Tandler mentions Washingtonโ€™s Vita Vea as a prospect that could be intriguing for Washington in the first round.
  • Tandler considers left guard to be an area of need for the Redskins, as they donโ€™t want to bring back Spencer Long and Shawn Lauvao is โ€œalmost certainly not going to be back.โ€
