NFC Notes: Kyler Murray, Cardinals, Rams, Seahawks

Cardinals

Cardinals GM Steve Keim said he is grateful to not require added focus on the quarterback position this offseason with Kyler Murray running things.

“Because it’s arguably the most important position on the field, you always put some time and effort into that position,” Keim said, via Darren Urban of the team’s official site. “(But) I would say my confidence at the position and in general is at a real high.”

Keim was hired by the organization in 2013. He compared having Murray to retired QB Carson Palmer because he “did all the right things” as a leader.

“Carson Palmer was a guy who excited us and did all the right things,” Keim said. “And then there were some things, as time went on from a durability standpoint, you were concerned if he could stay healthy. But he played at a high level and did a lot of things, was a great leader. Now, with a guy like Kyler Murray, the thing that is so exciting for me is having the opportunity to build around a young player, a guy you can grow with as an organization and as a roster. And there are different things you can do, especially with a rookie contract, as opposed to a veteran who is making a considerable part of your salary cap.”

Murray admits he felt angry and upset that the Cardinals missed out on the playoffs last season.

“Emotionally (last season) was definitely frustrating, especially for a guy like me,” Murray said. “I want to win. Not going to the playoffs is weird for me. I know it’s the NFL and I haven’t been yet, but โ€ฆ I’ve always played past the regular season, in every sport. It’s different. I am definitely not looking to get used to that. It’s definitely upsetting, lot of anger and frustrating when you are losing those games you think you should win. At the same time, I’m a self-motivated guy. I take all that as motivation.”

Rams

New Lions’ GM Brad Holmes mentioned Rams GM Les Snead was fielding โ€œa lot of callsโ€ for QB Jared Goff before they opted to trade him to Detroit.

โ€œBefore the trade, I remember (Rams GM) Les (Snead) asked me if I wanted Jared and I said, โ€˜Yes, I do want Jared.โ€™ He said, โ€˜Ok, Iโ€™m just asking because Iโ€™m getting a lot of calls.โ€™ Within that QB circle of teams that needed one, Jared was sought after, just as Carson Wentz was sought after, just as Sam Darnold was sought after. That Stafford (was sought after).โ€ Holmes said, via Tim Twentyman of DetroitLions.com.

Holmes also thinks that Goff earned an unfair reputation during his time in Los Angeles.

โ€œHe got a bad rap (in LA). He did,โ€ Holmes said. โ€œI didnโ€™t think it was always fair, but everyone has their own opinion about that. But, end of the day, heโ€™s in a great place right now. Heโ€™s got the chip on his shoulder, but itโ€™s very subtle because heโ€™s so calm and collective and even keel, which I always thought elevated his game.โ€

Seahawks

Seahawks HC Pete Carroll said S Marquise Blair is rehabbing well from a torn ACL.

โ€œMarquise, weโ€™re just protecting him going through it,โ€ Carroll said, via Seahawks Wire. โ€œHe has worked a lot, so he got a lot of stuff done here. Heโ€™s right back on track. Really, heโ€™s ahead of schedule in terms of learning his football, he is much further along than he was a year ago at this time. And weโ€™re moving him around, heโ€™s got a number of different things that heโ€™s doing. We want to give him a chance to show it โ€“ we love the playmaking that he has in him.

โ€œSo we just took care of him is all, didnโ€™t want to overload him this early.โ€
