NFC West Notes: 49ers, Rams, Seahawks

49ers

  • ESPN’s Nick Wagoner thinks the 49ers won’t use the franchise tag on DE Arik Armstead and will instead work out a long-term deal. However, he doesn’t rule out a potential tag-and-trade scenario.
  • Per the Athletic’s Matt Barrows, the 49ers released DL Ethan Westbrooks just two days after signing him earlier this offseason because GM John Lynch wasn’t comfortable with his previous arrest for domestic violence.
  • Though chargers were never filed, Barrows mentions Lynch’s experiences in a similar situation with former LB Reuben Foster may have affected his views. Barrows doesn’t address why Westbrooks was signed in the first place.

Rams

Seahawks

After being released by the Panthers, TE Greg Olsen was courted by the Bills, Redskins and Seahawks before eventually making the decision to sign a one-year deal with Seattle. Buffalo and Washington offered familiarity with former Carolina coaches, but Seattle offered the chance to win a Super Bowl with QB Russell Wilson. Ultimately, it was an easy choice.

“It was just too good of an opportunity to pass up,” Olsen said via the team website. “Their track record of success, consistency of winning. I’ve played in this city many times, and just the fanbase, the excitement, that stadium is one of the more unique venues in all of sports. And obviously Coach (Pete) Carroll, playing with somebody like Russell (Wilson), it just checks so many boxes I was looking for, and I’m confident I can just come in and do my part and help try to put (us) over the edge.”
