NFL Draft Notes: Chiefs, Quarterbacks, Lions, Manti Te’o, Jonathan Franklin

Here are some draft notes provided by Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports:

Chiefs

Citing numerous league sources, La Canfora sounds convinced that Texas A&M OT Luke Joeckel will be taken by the Chiefs at No. 1 overall.

Kansas City is reportedly “locked in on him,” but have also given strong consideration to Central Michigan LT Eric Fisher as well.

La Canfora adds that it’s unlikely that they’ll be able to trade out of the No. 1 spot.

Quarterbacks

La Canfora believes there will be three quarterbacks taken in round one, with West Virginia’s Geno Smith coming off the board first. The Jagaurs, Raiders, Eagles and Bills are mentioned as the most likely options for him in the first-round.

La Canfora sees USC’s Matt Barkley and Syracuse’s Ryan Nassib as the other two quarterbacks taken in the first-round.

It seems almost certain that one of the teams at the top of round two would have to trade up for this scenario to play out, but it’s definitely a possibility.

 Lions

The Lions would reportedly to trade out of the No. 5 overall pick and move back into the 20s if at all possible.

La Canfora adds that the Lions “seriously looking at guards” with the No. 5 overall pick, assuming that they’re unable to trade down.

Detroit has obvious needs at offensive tackle, defensive end and cornerback, so it would make sense for them to consider taking guys like Eric Fisher, Lane Johnson, Dion Jordan, Ezekiel Ansah or Dee Millner at No. 5 overall.

Jonathan Franklin

La Canfora expects UCLA RB Jonathan Franklin will be the first running back taken, but not until the second-round.

The Jets and Steelers are reportedly “looking hard at him,” so it will be interesting to see if New York is willing pass on a quarterback in the second-round for him.

Other Draft Notes:

  • The Bears and Vikings are “impressed” with Notre Dame LB Manti Te’o, who’s likely to get drafted in round one.
  • La Canfora lists Kent State G Brian Winters, Georgia Southern S J.J. Wilcox and Southeast Louisiana CB Robert Alford as players rising up draft boards.
  • La Canfora lists Texas A&M DE Damontre Moore, Tennessee WR Cordarrelle Patterson, and George ILB Alec Ogletree as players who are dropping in the days leading up to the draft.
