NFL Notes: 49ers, Bengals, Chiefs, Titans

49ers

  • 49ers HC Kyle Shanahan told reporters that LB NaVorro Bowman is fine with the team’s explanation regarding the trade rumor (NFLTR) that recently surfaced involving him. (Cam Inman)
  • Shanahan added that Bowman is “looking good” in his return from an Achilles tear.

Bengals

  • Bengals CB Dre Kirkpatrick told reporters that he suffered a small fracture to his right hand during a “freak accident.” The expectation is that he’ll be out 2-3 weeks with this issue. (Katherine Terrell)

Chiefs

Chiefs QB Alex Smith clarified his recent comments that the team doesn’t appear to be committed to him (NFLTR) beyond the 2017 season.

“What I felt like I said is, this is my 13th year, we’re opening with New England, right now we’re in the middle of OTAs, right now I’m worried about beating our defense,” Smith said, via the Kansas City Star.

In the back of my head I’d be lying if I didn’t know the opener was there. Beyond that, I’m not thinking about Week 2, I’m not thinking about next year, I’m not guaranteed beyond that. I’ve been playing long enough to know that. This is a year-to-year deal, regardless of draft picks behind me or free agency.

“That’s the deal. You have to go out and prove it every week, every year. If you don’t they’re going to find somebody who can. That’s the nature of the business. That’s what I felt like I tried to say, not that my days were numbered or anything like that. It’s no different than my mentality when I first got here.”

Titans

Titans QB Marcus Mariota is still working his way back from a broken leg he suffered late last season, but he was able to take part in Tuesday’s OTA session.

“It felt great,” Mariota said, via Paul Kuharsky of ESPN. “Four months ago I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to participate in OTAs and being able to do some of the drills through practice, it (says) a lot about my progress and my recovery. I was very happy and very grateful to be out there.
