NFL Notes: College HC Candidates, Bills, & Texans

College HC Candidates

  • Ian Rapoport of NFL Media lists UCLA’s Jim Mora Jr, Texas A&M’s Kevin Sumlin and Notre Dame’s Brian Kelly as three college coaches who are open to taking a head-coaching job in the NFL.
  • According to Rapoport, Kelly’s name has been suggested my some as a potential option for the Giants if they end up having a opening.

Bills

  • Mike Rodak of ESPN writes that Bills GM Doug Whaley will likely receive sharper criticism for trading Matt Cassel for a future late-round pick after EJ Manuel continued to struggle during Sunday’s game against the Jaguars.
  • Adam Schefter mentioned earlier in the day that the Bills’ coaching staff wasn’t happy about the move in the first place, and could be even angrier with Whaley’s decision after today’s performance.

Texans

  • John McClain reports that Texans backup QB Ryan Mallett missed the team charter and had to fly commercial to the Dolphins’ game.
  • After the Texans decided to go with Brian Hoyer as their starting quarterback coming out of the preseason, Mallett slept through practice, so this could end up being a big concern for Houston.
  • McClain mentions that if Tom Savage wasn’t on injured reserve and could be their backup, he could see the Texans releasing Mallett.
