NFL Notes: Colts, Giants, Jets, & Patriots

Colts

  • Aaron Wilson reports thatย free agent DBย Jeremy Deering is expected to visit with the Colts on Monday if he’s not signed by the Eagles.

Giants

  • Tom Rock of Newsday reports that Giants S Bennett Jackson may haveย suffered an ACL injury to his right knee during Saturday’s game and could be outย for the season.

Jets

  • A personnel executive tells Rich Ciminiย that the Jets are “better off” with Ryan Fitzpatrick as their starter than Geno Smith.
  • People around the NFL also pointed out that none of the Jets’ players came to Smith’s defense immediately after he suffered a broken jaw.
  • According to Cimini, the Jets organization has “mixed” feeling about former second-round TE Jace Amaro.
Cimini believes Amaro could be on the hot seat, but it’s not a given that the Jets look to move on from him so soon.
  • Cimini writes that the Jets are likely to keep four quarterbacks on their roster — Fitzpatrick, Smith, Matt Flynn, and rookie Bryce Petty.

Patriots

Patriots Sย Devin McCourty said after Saturday’s game that he’s hoping the move toย cornerback isn’t permanent.

“I hope it’s not permanent,” McCourty said, via CSNNE.com. “As a player, that’s out of your control.”

McCourty wound up signing a new contract extension during the offseason that pays him as a safety, so this could be among his concerns regarding a move to corner.

“It’s the first time I’ve played corner in a game, I think, in like three years, so obviously it’s a lot of frustration but you just gotta play,”ย McCourty said. “…It didn’t feel great, and I don’t think it looked great so we’ll see.

  • Mike Reiss mentions that CB Malcolm Butler is locked into the starting job at left cornerback while Logan Ryan and Tarell Brown remain the top candidates to start on the right side.
  • Reiss doesn’t see McCourty moving to cornerback full-time.
