NFL Notes: Odell Beckham Trade, Dwayne Haskins, Draft

Odell Beckham

  • ESPN’s Jordan Raanan reports the 49ers discussed dropping down from No. 2 to No. 6 with the Giants in exchange for WR Odell Beckham at the NFL Combine.
  • However, the Giants wanted DE DeForest Buckner, who the 49ers were unwilling to give up.
  • The Giants also briefly discussed a trade with the Bills, but neither Buffalo nor San Francisco offered a first-round pick at the Combine.
  • The Browns offered DE Emmanuel Ogbah to the Giants as a part of trade discussions before settling on S Jabrill Peppers
  • Raanan reports the Giants didn’t shop the Beckham deal around the league to see if anyone else would beat it, though it’s believed the 49ers would have been willing to offer more.

Dwayne Haskins

  • NFL Media’s Lance Zierlein says his growing sense from speaking to teams is Ohio State QB Dwayne Haskins might not be the second quarterback off the board.
  • Zierlein writes Haskins’ stock could be more media-driven than team-driven, and he could slip on draft day as a result.
  • Haskins is reportedly visiting with the Redskins and Broncos this week. (NFLTR)

Draft

  • The Bills, Titans, Ravens, and Giants all had position coaches, offensive coordinators, or personnel executives at Stanford’s Pro Day, while Patriots’ director of player personnel Nick Caserio attended. (Tony Pauline)
  • Pauline adds that the 49ers and Raiders had “large contingents” on hand at Stanford’s Pro Day.
  • Stanford WR J.J. Arcega-Whiteside met with the Titans and Saints last week, while the Ravensrank him highly” and hope to draft “two receivers” by the third-round of the 2019 NFL Draft.
  • Stanford WR/return specialist Trenton Irwin spent time with the Titans and Saints at his Pro Day and has official-30 visits scheduled with the Dolphins and Bengals.

  1. John Lynch and the 49ers are just “butt-hurt” over losing Beckham to the Brownies via trade. All this “hogwash” that the 49ers were willing to offer more is bull crap. If that was the case with the 49ers. Lynch had Gettleman on the phone and could have made an aggressive deal right there and then.

The proposed deal that Gettleman mentioned to Lynch allegedly had the GMEN sending Beckham and their 2019 1st rounder #6 to the 49ers. In return the 49ers would have sent Buckner and their 2019 1st rounder #2 to the GMEN. At #6 the 49ers could have chosen from a plethora of defensive talent to replace Buckner. The 49ers could have moved Solomon Thomas inside permanently and could pair him with a defensive stud like Ed Oliver or Jefferey Simmons.

The 49ers would have had Beckham to pair with TE Little and the running game of Coleman, Breida, Mostert and McKinnon.

The GMEN then would have had a front line of Hill, Buckner, Tomlinson and most likely would have taken Allen or Bosa at #2.

The get back the GMEN received from the Brownies for Beckham is a much better deal. The GMEN got back a rock solid OG in Zeitler, a SS in Peppers and the 17th and 95th picks in this upcoming draft. All while gaining $6.5M in 2019 cap space ($5M on Beckham and $1.5M on Vernon) and ridding themselves of an oft injured underperforming DE in Vernon and a major distraction in WR Beckham.
