NFL Notes: XFL, Cardinals, 49ers

XFL

  • Albert Breer of SI, says that offensive lineman and quarterbacks are the two positions that NFL teams will be looking at the most during this season of the XFL.
  • According to Breer, quarterbacks Cardale Jones and P.J. Walker are currently the two most obvious candidates to make a return to the NFL.

Cardinals

Cardinals OT D.J. Humphries said he knew he was going to earn a big-money extension from the team.

“Sometimes people don’t see what you see,” Humphries said, via AzCardinals.com. “And it’s not their fault. They’re not supposed to. โ€ฆ I knew this was going to happen two years ago. Because I wrote it in my head. It was just a matter of putting in the work.”

I genuinely feel like I just started to figure out how to do it the right way,” Humphries added. “I feel the same way I did two years ago โ€“ these people have no idea.

“I just came from the gym, and we were planning for the next 36 months, trying to figure out how to maximize this. This is the first time you really, ‘You’ve been healthy, you can show everybody.’ They saw it this (past) season โ€“ whether you want to acknowledge it or not, talk all you want, (allowing) two sacks is two sacks. I play in the National Football League. โ€ฆ I know when I play, and my teammates know the work I put into this thing. I know the recipe.

According to Humphries, leaving the Cardinals was “never a question” for him.

“I was never leaving Arizona,” Humphries said. “That was never a question.”

49ers

49ers OL Daniel Brunskill was a revelation for San Francisco in 2019. Signed following a stint in the now-defunct AAF, Brunskill was pressed into action after injuries hit the 49ers offensive line. He started four games at right tackle, one at left tackle and two at right guard. He wasn’t without his struggles but his unflappable nature and ability to bounce back impressed the coaches and has him firmly in the 49ers plans, though at a yet-to-be-determined position.

โ€œThatโ€™s a great question,โ€ 49ers OL coach John Benton said before the Super Bowl via the Athletic’s Matt Barrows. โ€œI would have guessed an interior guy, center or guard. But he did very well at tackle. I overheard him getting asked the same question and he said, ‘Hey, Iโ€™m just a football player.’ I think thatโ€™s true with him. Heโ€™s very technical at tackle so I think he can handle it out there. I think itโ€™ll probably be where his first opportunity lies. Weโ€™re even teaching him to snap right now, so maybe center.โ€
