NFL Playoff Games Could Expand To Friday & Monday Night

According to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, the league is considering the idea of adding playoff games on Friday and Monday night for the wildcard round of the playoffs.

โ€œThe big discussion would be the first weekend, the wild card weekend of the playoffs, how would you structure that? Three on Saturday, three on Sunday? Weโ€™re looking at every alternative, and I think thatโ€™s what the membership ultimately is going to have to decide,โ€ Goodell said, via Pro Football Talkโ€œWould you play a game on Friday night, two on Saturday, two on Sunday and another on Monday?โ€

There appears to be growing support among owners to expand the playoffs to include seven teams in each conference. While itโ€™s looking like this is closer to becoming reality, Goodell mentioned that there are issues to be worked out that include a team playing on Monday having a short week to prefer for their divisional opponent.

Either way, Goodell doesnโ€™t envision any changes to the playoff format before 2015.

โ€œI would be surprised if it happens this year. I think if it happened it probably wouldnโ€™t happen before โ€™15,โ€ Goodell said.
