NFL Playoff Games Could Expand To Friday & Monday Night

According to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, the league is considering the idea of adding playoff games on Friday and Monday night for the wildcard round of the playoffs.

“The big discussion would be the first weekend, the wild card weekend of the playoffs, how would you structure that? Three on Saturday, three on Sunday? We’re looking at every alternative, and I think that’s what the membership ultimately is going to have to decide,” Goodell said, via Pro Football Talk“Would you play a game on Friday night, two on Saturday, two on Sunday and another on Monday?

There appears to be growing support among owners to expand the playoffs to include seven teams in each conference. While it’s looking like this is closer to becoming reality, Goodell mentioned that there are issues to be worked out that include a team playing on Monday having a short week to prefer for their divisional opponent.

Either way, Goodell doesn’t envision any changes to the playoff format before 2015.

“I would be surprised if it happens this year. I think if it happened it probably wouldn’t happen before ’15,” Goodell said.
