NFL Rumors: Another Kevin Kolb Trade Update

Eagles president Joe Banner discussed the possibly that the team could trade Kevin Kolb with the Philadelphia Inquirer. Banner mentions that the market for Kolb is actually better than it was for Donovan McNabb last season and that the Eagles could actually get multiple picks for him if they traded him after the draft.

“But the pool of teams interested in him is much bigger this year, by the dynamic of how many teams need a quarterback and how few other options there are to get one,” said Banner. “There were a group of teams that last year tried to get be with OK quarterback situations and it didn’t work out very well at all – all the West Coast teams, Carolinas, the Miamis.”

As to what teams are interested in Kolb, Banner said that, “they are the teams people are guessing [they might be].”

Every now and then the speculation proves to be accurate so at least we know that the NFC West teams like Seattle, San Francisco and Arizona are in play as well as other usual suspects.

Last week we posted some comments from Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid in which he suggested that they will entertain the idea of trading Kolb. Eagles GM G.M. Howie Roseman appears to feel the same way about the idea.

“Obviously, there’s a lot of interest in a player like Kevin Kolb,” Roseman said via Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Roseman addresses Kolbs value in relation to drafting and developing a quarterback.

“When you look at the history of quarterbacks getting drafted, you’re not looking at a group that’s a slam-dunk to begin with,” Roseman said.  With Kolb on the other hand, “You’ve got a bird in the hand, in terms of a guy who’s played at a high level and played against top-level competition.”

Our position throughout the offseason was that the Eagles would shop Kolb to see if anyone was willing to part with multiple draft picks in return for him but if not they would retain him as their backup and may even let Michael Vick leave at the end of the 2011 season. Roseman’s comments seem like a sales pitch on some level which would make chance that the Eagles have Vick beyond next season seem even more likely.

NFC West Teams

All of the NFC West teams other than St Louis are rumored to be in on Kolb. ESPN’s Mike Sando makes the case for the Seattle Seahawks by mentioning that Seattle runs a west-coast offense simliar to Philadelphias and they have brought in Darrell Bevell as their new offensive coordinator, who spent time under Brad Childress in Minnesota and spent time with Andy Reid in Philly. The idea makes sense but Pete Carroll could take a quarterback during the draft depending on how things play out so there’s still a lot that can happen.

SI’s Peter King reports that at least one NFL team has already offered a first-round pick in return for Kolb. King writes that Reid is looking for team that has a higher pick in the upcoming draft than the team that has already made an offer. This is purely speculative but from Kings suggestion that the Eagles are looking for a team with a higher pick, you could assume that the Seahawks are the team that’s made the offer considering that they have the No. 25 overall pick. If the Eagles had received an offer from the 49ers or Cardinals they would be hard pressed to find another team willing to give them a higher pick than either the No. 5 or No. 7 overall selection.
