NFLPA Proposes Spreading Revenue Losses Over Nine Years

Tom Pelissero of NFL Media reports that the NFLPA sent the NFL the following economic counterproposal as they prepare for the 2020 season:

  • No escrow of 2020 salaries
  • Flat salary cap of $198.2M for 2021
  • Spread revenue loss this year over 2022-2030 caps
  • All fully guaranteed money paid even if games are canceled

Pelissero says the NFLPA would be paid a “COVID-19 risk stipend” of up to $500,000 if games are canceled. However, the exact figure would depend on when cancellation occurs, among other factors, according to Pelissero.

Both the NFL and NFLPA are reportedly on the same page that they don’t want the salary cap to plummet in 2021.

The NFL proposed placing 35 percent of player salaries in escrow, but the NFLPA doesn’t want the players taking the whole hit in a single year.

According to Pelissero, the two parties are set to have a call on Monday to go over the specifics of a potential deal.

The economics for the upcoming season remains the biggest question mark for the NFL. Training camps are set to open on July 28 as of now.
