Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports that the Packers are releasing OLB Nick Perry after agreeing to terms with pass rushers Preston Smith and ZaDarius Smith.
The Packers have officially announced Perry’s release:
“We want to thank Nick for his contributions to the Green Bay Packers and the community over the last seven seasons,” Packers GM Brian Gutekunst said. “He did a tremendous job on the field, was a great teammate and a true professional. We wish Nick, his wife, Audrianna, and their family all the best.”
Perry was an obvious release candidate for the Packers, even before they made the two new outside linebacker signings.
Perry, 28, is a former first-round pick of the Packers back in 2012. He played out his rookie contract before testing the open market for the first time and eventually returning to Green Bay on a five-year, $60 million contract that included an $18.5 million signing bonus.
Perry was set to make base salaries of $1.9 million and $5.2 million over the next two years.
According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Perry will free up $3,337,500 of available cap space while creating $11.1 million in dead money. However, those numbers improve to $10,737,500 of cap room and $3.7 million of dead money if he’s designated as a post-June 1 release.
In 2018, Perry has appeared in nine games for the Packers and recorded 24 total tackles, 1.5 sacks, one forced fumble, and three pass defenses. Pro Football Focus had him rated as the No. 100 overall edge defender out of 106 qualifying players.
