Panthers CB Ross Cockrell went down with what appears to be a leg injury during Monday’s practice after colliding with WR Torrey Smith, according to reporters in attendance. Cockrell was carted off of the field and the team ended practice right after.
Joe Person says that Cockrell was yelling, “My leg is broke.”
Jourdan Rodrigue adds that she could hear a bone crack and scream from Cockrell while Panthers’ players reacted in horror.
Cockrell, 26, is a former fourth-round pick of the Bills back in 2014. He lasted just over a year in Buffalo before he was waived at the start of the 2015 season.
The Steelers signed him to a contract just a week later and elected to bring him back on a one-year, $1.797 million restricted contract for the 2016 season. Pittsburgh later traded Cockrell to the Giants for a 2018 seventh-round pick.
Cockrell wound up signing a two-year, $6.8M deal with the Panthers this past March.
In 2017, Cockrell appeared in all 16 games for the Giants and recorded 50 tackles, three interceptions, and 11 pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 39 cornerback out of 120 qualifying players.
We’ll have more regarding Cockrell’s injury as the news is available.
