Panthers Waive CB Bene Benwikere

Tom Pelissero of USA Today reports that the Panthers are placing CB Bene Benwikere on waivers Friday.

This comes after a poor performance against Falcons WR Julio Jones. There had been some talk that the Panthers could bench Benwikere in Week 5 after this performance, but it’s surprising to see Carolina move on from him so early into the season.

Benwikere previously told reporters that the Falcons exposed his conditioning by running consecutive deep routes against him, per Conor Orr.

Benwikere, 25, is a former fifth-round pick of the Panthers back in 2014. He’s currently in the third year of his four-year, $2.419 million contract and set to make a base salary of $600,000 for the 2016 season.

In 2016, Benwikere has appeared in four games for the Panthers and recorded 10 tackles, one interception and four pass defenses for the Panthers. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 87 cornerback out of 111 qualifying players.
