Jim McBride reports that the Patriots are placing RB Rex Burkhead (neck) and rookie LB Ja’Whaun Bentley (unknown) on injured reserve Wednesday.

The Patriots currently have Sony Michel, James White and Kenjon Barner on their roster at running back.

Burkhead, 28, is a former sixth-round pick of the Bengals back in 2013. He played out his four-year, $2,262,200 contract with the Bengals and signed on with the Patriots to a one-year deal last offseason.

The Patriots brought Burkhead back on a three-year, $9.75 million contract this past March.

In 2018, Burkhead appeared in three games for the Patriots and rushed for 86 yards on 24 carries (3.6 YPC) to go along with three receptions for 31 yards receiving and no touchdowns.

Bentley, 22, was selected with the fifth round of this year’s draft by the Patriots. He signed a four-year, $2,763,952 and stands to make base salaries of $480,000 and $570,000 over the first two years of the agreement.

In 2018, Bentley appeared in three games for the Patriots and recorded 14 tackles, an interception and a pass defense.
