Raiders Placing DB Obi Melifonwu On IR, Activating CB Antonio Hamilton From IR

Raiders HC Jack Del Rio told reporters on Friday that they’ve activating CB Antonio Hamilton (knee) from injured reserve in time for their game against the Cowboys and will place rookie DB Obi Melifonwu on injured reserve, per Michael Gehlken.

Del Rio added that Melifonwu has already undergone hip surgery, which happens to be his second procedure since August, per Gehlken.

Melifonwu, 23, was selected by the Raiders with the No. 56 overall pick. According to OverTheCap.com, Melifonwu will receive a four-year contract worth $4,509,376, which includes a signing bonus of $1,419,544.

The Raiders placed Melifonwu on injured reserve coming out of the preseason while he was working his way back from knee surgery and later brought him back.

In 2017, Melifonwu appeared in five games for the Raiders and recorded seven tackles and no interceptions or pass defenses.

During his four-year college career at Connecticut, Melifonwu recorded 349 total tackles, 11 tackles for loss, eight interceptions, 16 pass defenses, two fumble recoveries, and two forced fumble.

Hamilton, 24, wound up signing a three-year, $1.62 million contract with the Raiders as an undrafted free agent out of South Carolina State back in 2016. He stands to make base salaries of $540,000and $630,000 over the next two years of the contract.

The Raiders placed him on injured reserve a few months ago with an ankle injury before later designating him to return.

In 2017, Hamilton has appeared in five games for the Raiders and recorded one tackle and no interceptions.
