Vic Tafur of The Athletic reports that the Raiders are signing veteran S D.J. Swearinger to a contract on Friday.
Raiders S Karl Joseph suffered a potentially serious injury and Lamarcus Joyner also sustained an injury during Thursday’s win over the Chargers.
Jon Gruden told reporters that he was concerned about both injuries, so it’s not a big surprise to see them move quickly to add some depth.
It’s worth mentioning that Oakland worked Swearinger last week.
Swearinger, 28, is a former second-round pick of the Texans back in 2013. He lasted just over two years in Houston before he was waived at the start of the 2015 season and later claimed off of waivers by the Buccaneers.
Tampa Bay cut Swearinger loose during the 2015 season and he eventually caught on with the Cardinals. The Redskins signed him to a three-year, $13.5 million contract back in 2017 but elected to waive him at the end of last season.
Swearinger was later claimed by the Cardinals before being released a few weeks ago.
In 2019, Swearinger has appeared in four games for the Cardinals and recorded 28 total tackles, no interceptions and one pass defense. He’s rated by Pro Football Focus as the No. 73 safety out of 80 qualifying players so far this season.
