A source tells John Keim of ESPN that the Redskins will likely pick up their team option on veteran RB Adrian Peterson for the 2020 season, but there’s no guarantee right now.
Washington will need to decide on Peterson’s option in the coming weeks, which would result in him counting $3.1 million against the team’s salary. Should the Redskins pass on Peterson’s option, it would save them $2.4 million.
Keim notes that Peterson’s durability the past two seasons is one of the primary reasons why they would keep him around.
Peterson, 34, is a former first-round pick of the Vikings back in 2007. After 10 seasons in Minnesota, Peterson signed a two-year, $7 million contract with the Saints.
The Saints later traded Peterson to the Cardinals for a 2018 sixth-round pick back in 2017. However, Arizona cut him loose and he eventually signed on with the Redskins.
Washington brought Peterson back last year on a two-year contract worth $8 million that included an option.
In 2019, Peterson appeared in 15 games for the Redskins and rushed for 898 yards on 211 carries (4.3 YPC) to go along with 17 receptions for 142 yards receiving and five total touchdowns.
