According to Chris Mortensen, the Redskins are still worth watching as a potential landing spot for Cardinals QB Josh Rosen if he’s traded.
Mortensen adds the Redskins are doing “genuine due diligence” on all of the top rookie quarterbacks.
The Redskins traded for QB Case Keenum, who as of now is slated to compete with Colt McCoy for the starting position, but there are still questions about their quarterback situation long-term, due to the health of Alex Smith.
Washington has $20.4 million in cap space tied up in Smith, per Over The Cap, who might not even play football again after complications recovering from a leg injury.
That makes adding a quarterback on a rookie contract, either by trading for Rosen or drafting a guy, the most efficient way to address the position for the Redskins.
Redskins HC Jay Gruden said at the NFL owners meetings the team liked what it saw when it scouted Rosen last year, but added there was nothing else to talk about because the Cardinals hadn’t made him available, per J.P. Finlay.
Missouri QB Drew Lock is slated to visit the Redskins this week and Washington has also reportedly set up meetings with West Virginia QB Will Grier.
Oklahoma QB Kyler Murray and Ohio State QB Dwayne Haskins are seen as the consensus top two quarterbacks in the class, but Washington would likely have to make a major trade up to acquire one of them.
Rosen, 22, is a former first-round pick of the Cardinals back in 2018. He signed a four-year, $17,664,284 contract that includes an $10,926,792 signing bonus.
The contract includes a fifth-year option for the Cardinals to pick up in 2021.
In 2018, Rosen appeared in 14 games for the Cardinals and completed 55.2 percent of his passes for 2,278 yards, 11 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.
