Reggie Wayne Taking A Physical For Patriots Sunday

ESPN’s Adam Schefter, citing a league source, reports that free agent WR Reggie Wayne is in New England Sunday and is taking a physical for the Patriots.

  • Albert Breer spoke to an AFC executive who said Wayne has “very little” left to offer an NFL team. Breer’s AFC source added that Wayne’s “loss of speed and explosiveness is evident.”
  • However, an NFC director believes he has a “solid year left in him.”

There’s been a lot of speculation that the Panthers could be interested in signing Wayne to a contract following the loss of WR Kelvin Benjamin to a torn ACL.

However, Carolina has maintained that they would prefer to take a look at their younger players before bringing in a veteran.

Patriots HC Bill Belichick has taken chances on veteran receivers in the past such as Randy Moss and Chad Johnson, so it’s not all that surprising to hear that they’re kicking the tires on another accomplished receiver in Wayne.

Wayne, 36, was taken in the first round of the 2001 draft by the Colts. He’s played his entire career in Indianapolis and is in the discussion as a potential Hall of Fame receiver along with fellow Colt Marvin Harrison.

Wayne unfortunately suffered a major knee injury in 2013 and wasn’t able to return to his previous form upon returning to the field last season.

In 2014, Wayne appeared in 15 games and caught 64 passes for 779 yards and two touchdowns for the Colts. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 106 receiver out of 110 qualifying players, so this clearly wasn’t a great season by his standards.
