Report: Cowboys Open To Trading For Wide Receiver Help

According to SI.com’s Mike Fisher, the Cowboys are generally interested in potentially trading for a slot receiver to fill the void left by Randall Cobb.

Fisher asked his sources whether Dallas would be interested in trading for “a player like” Cardinals WR Christian Kirk after the former Texas A&M slot receiver was mentioned on Twitter as an option.

The source said as it relates to Kirk, 49ers WR Marquise Goodwin or any other affordable veteran receiver, the answer is generally “yes.”

While there haven’t been any specific reports about Kirk being available, the Cardinals did just trade for DeAndre Hopkins, drafted three receivers last year and have shown interest in adding more in this year’s draft.

As for Goodwin, the 49ers are reportedly willing to trade him as he’s been overshadowed by younger wideouts on the roster and hasn’t been able to stay healthy. He’s also owed $10 million over the next two seasons and could just end up being released.

Regarding free agent receivers still available like Rashard Higgins, Tavon Austin, Fisher writes the Cowboys think Higgins doesn’t offer anything anyone already on Dallas’ roster doesn’t. Meanwhile, Dallas’ lack of urgency in re-signing Austin speaks to how they feel about him, per Fisher.

Kirk, 23, was taken in the second round out of Texas A&M by the Cardinals in 2018. He agreed to a four-year, $5,894,874 contract that includes a $2,367,180 signing bonus.

In 2019, Kirk appeared in 13 games and caught 68 passes for 709 yards receiving and three touchdowns. He also rushed for 93 yards on 10 attempts.

Goodwin, 29, is a former third-round pick of the Bills back in 2013. He spent four years in Buffalo before signing a two-year contract with the 49ers last year worth up to $8 million.

Goodwin was set to make just $1.45 million for the 2018 season when he agreed to a three-year, $20.3 million extension with $10 million guaranteed.

According to OverTheCap.com, trading Goodwin would free up $3,656,250 of available cap space while creating $1.25 million in dead money.

In 2019, Goodwin appeared in nine games for the 49ers and caught 12 passes for 186 yards and one touchdown. He also rushed for 15 yards.
