Report: Jets Have Inquired About Alterraun Verner, Captain Munnerlyn, T.J. Ward & Chris Clemens

Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, citing a team source, reports that the Jets have inquired about few defensive backs: Alterraun Verner (Titans), Captain Munnerlyn (Panthers), T.J. Ward (Browns) and Chris Clemens (Dolphins).

Recent reports have indicated that the Jets are likely to be aggressive in signing a a replacement for Antonio Cromartie, who was released on Sunday.

Verner, 25, is appears to be the hottest cornerback in this year’s free agent class. He finished the year with 57 tackles, five interceptions including one for a touchdown, two fumble recoveries and 23 pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has Verner rated as the No. 12 cornerback in the league this season.

Ward, 27,  totaled 112 tackles, two sacks, an interception and a fumble returned for a touchdown for the Browns last year. Pro Football Focus had him rated as the No. 3 safety in the league last year.

Munnerlyn, 25, is coming off of a great season in which he produced 73 tackles, 3 sacks, 2 interceptions — both of which were returned for touchdowns — a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. He was rated as the No. 11 cornerback in the league, according to Pro Football Focus.

Clemons, 28, signed a one-year contract worth $2.75 million with the Dolphins last season, so I’m sure he’ll be looking for a lot more security in his next contract. In 2013, Clemens totaled 92 tackles, one interception and eight passes defensed over the course of 16 games.

We have all four of these players featured in our Top 100 Free Agents list.
