NFL Has No Plans To Delay Free Agency

Update:

Dan Graziano spoke to sources last night and Friday morning who told him that the NFL has no plans to move back the start of the league year.

Beyond that, Graziano says the NFLPA vote on CBA is still scheduled to wrap up on Saturday 11:59 pm ET and the union has no plans to reconsider Monday’s resolution that would have allowed players to change their votes.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, citing a league source, reports that the NFL is currently is contemplating the possibility of delaying the start of free agency, which is set to begin next Wednesday at 4 pm EST.

Florio says an announcement could come as soon as Sunday, as the NFL reportedly wants to wait until after the NFLPA votes on the proposed CBA before making a final decision that could impact the voting process further.

On Thursday, the NFL announced that they currently have no plans to delay the start of the league year.

However, many have questioned whether it’s in the best interest of the league to start free agency during a time when several sports leagues have announced delays and cancelations due to the spread of COVID-19.

Florio says the NFL is aware of the optics of players agreeing to terms on multi-million-dollar deals while most of the country dealing with the fall out from the coronavirus.

Nearly every team announced Thursday that they’re closing facilities and instructing employees to work from home.

During the second wave of free agency, players will begin to travel to meet with teams and take physical to finalize agreements, so it could just be best for everyone to wait until later to begin free agency.

We’ll have more regarding free agency as the news is available.
