Report: People Around NFL Convinced Giants Will Take QB At No. 6 Overall

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that “several smart people around the NFL are convinced” that the Giants will take a quarterback at No. 6 overall, despite the recent buzz that New York is likely to go with a defensive player with their first pick in the draft.

Rapoport specifically mentions Dwayne Haskins and Daniel Jones as two players likely to garner consideration from New York as high as No. 6 overall.

The Giants also own No. 17 overall following the Odell Beckham Jr trade, which they could use for a quarterback later on if they don’t feel like there’s a quarterback worth taking at No. 6.

Waiting until No. 17 could leave the Giants in a situation where they may have to consider trading up to get their guy, as teams like the Bengals, Dolphins and Redskins could also be in the mix to draft a quarterback in round one.

Haskins has said he’s comfortable sitting and learning from Eli Manning and Rapoport adds that Haskins was “incredibly impressive” in his meetings with teams and is the kind of quarterback New York would like as the face of the franchise moving forward.

We’ll have more regarding the Giants as the news is available.

  1. I was totally against taking a QB @ #6 all along. In fact, I was convinced that we would take Ed Oliver, and would be grinning all the way to the Pro Bowl. And I still think that that would be a great outcome. But after having seen Dwayne Haskins on TV this morning with Mike Greenberg & the Get Up crew, I was just so impressed with that young man that I’m having 2nd thoughts. His composure, his knowledge of the game, and his comfort in the spotlight make me think that maybe he SHOULD be the next QB for my beloved Jints. And I don’t want to risk waiting until #17 to see if he’s still there. (I’m not even sure he’ll be there at 6!) There’s no other QB in this draft (including Kyler & Rosen) who I’d take @ #6, though, so if he’s gone, I’d revert back to Oliver, happily. And if Oliver’s gone too, that must mean that either Q-Wil, Bosa, or Josh Allen have fallen down to #6–any one of which (in that order) I’d also be happy to have.

    • You are on point with the Ed Oliver pick at #6 for the GMEN. Although Oliver will most likely go at #4 to the Raiders or definitely at #5 to the Bucs (McCoy is traded if Oliver is there at #5) and barring trades.

LSU LB Devin White would be my pick. White gives Gettleman his Luke Kuechly and Thomas Davis type of LB who is a tackling machine with speed, speed and more speed. The GMEN have needed a dominant MLB presence since Antonio Pierce roamed The Big Blue Midway. Ogletree is better suited for a 3-4 scheme as is Goodson. At pick #17 the GMEN could go interior or edge with Lawrence, Wilkins, Simmons, Sweat or Ferrell.

Free agent OL Mike Remmers will be signed by the GMEN on or after the draft. Which basically solidifies the right side with Zeitler and Wheeler.

As for Dwayne Haskins, he is a good kid and has a rocket launcher for a right arm. But! Haskins is limited mobility wise in the pocket. And Buckeye QBS are BUSTS in the NFL. Look at Troy Smith, Terrelle Pryor, Braxton Miller, Cardale Jones and JT Barrett. Smith is retired, Pryor is trying to become a WR on his 4th or 5th team, Miller converted to TE, Jones is on his 2nd team as a backup at most and Barrett went undrafted and is currently a practice squad player.

The GMEN A-B-C game plan checklist is as follows:
      A) Rebuild the offensive and defensive lines. When Remmers is signed the oline is complete. The defensive side will be rebuilt in this draft with picks 6, 17 and 37.

      B) Have a dominant rushing attack and reliable receivers. Barkley and Gallman are the bulls. And Shepard, Tate, Engram, Latimer, Fowler and Coleman fight for catches.

      C) In the offseason of 2020, the only piece left to replace is the QB position. And it just so happens Elisha Manning is no longer under contract. And the 2020 Draft is loaded with young QB prospects. Although I believe the GMEN will GET Cam Newton in 2020.

  2. Yeah! Several smart people around the NFL. Name the smart people of the NFL so the GMEN FANS like myself can personally congratulate them on being WRONG.

Hey Ian! You and your smart NFL people (sources) have NOT been paying attention to the facts. Which leads to your moniker FAKE NEWS MEDIA and this is not COLLUSION either. You guys are kind of OBSTRUCTING the fact that the GMEN are going defense with both first rounders.

Dave Gettleman clearly stated numerous times prior to the GMEN last two drafts. “When selecting 1st round picks, the player or players must be “Gold Jacket” type guys.” The gold jacket term means “Hall Of Fame” type player(s).

Needless to say, though I will anyway. Not one of the QBs in the 2019 draft class are the caliber of the QBs in the 2018 class. Let alone gold jacket type players. Yet! The unnamed smart people of the NFL have the GMEN taking a QB at #6 or #17. when everyone with a half-a-brain knows Dave Gettleman loves his “hog-mollies” and this draft is loaded with them on both sides of the ball.
