Report: Steelers Releasing OLB LaMarr Woodley

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Steelers are releasing veteran OLB LaMarr Woodley.

  • Schefter adds that Woodley will be designated as a post-June 1 release.
  • Multiple reports have mentioned that Woodley has been informed of his release.
  • Ian Rapoport expects the transaction to be posted on Tuesday.

Woodley has been rumored to be on the chopping block since the Steelers elected to use their transition tag on OLB Jason Worilds a few weeks ago.

Woodley had a cap figure of $13.6 million for the 2014 season. By designating him as a June-1 release, the Steelers will free up $8 million cap space, according to OverTheCap.com.

  • Jason Fitzgerald mentions that the Steelers won’t receive this cap space until June 2 and will carry $8.58 million in dead next year.

Woodley, 29, dealt with numerous injuries this year which limited him to appearing in just 11 games. Since signing a six-year deal worth $61.5 million back in 2011, Woodley has missed 14 games due injury.

In 2013, Woodley 36 tackles and five sacks to go along with a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
