Report: XFL Has Had Contract Talks With Colin Kaepernick

A spokesperson for the XFL confirmed to Sporting News that former 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick discussed joining the league this past fall.

The XFL declined to give details of contract talks, but sources told Sporting News that Kaepernick wanted at least $20 million in any contract.

Kaepernick’s attorney Mark Geragos did not return an email from Sporting News seeking comment.

The XFL, owned by WWE’s Vince McMahon, is set to kick off in February of 2020.  It’s a reboot from the previous XFL, also owned by McMahon, that only played one season in 2001.

This comes shortly after the news that the NFL and Kaepernick settled their collusion case.

The AAF reportedly reached out to Kaepernick about playing in the new league, but a report mentioned that he was seeking more than $20 million, though this report was later disputed.

Kaepernick, 31, is a former second-round pick of the 49ers back in 2010. He was in the third year of his seven-year, $126.97 million contract that included $61 million guaranteed when reached an agreement with the 49ers on a restructured deal that allowed him to become an unrestricted free agent in 2016.

The Seahawks showed interest in bringing Kaepernick in for a visit last offseason before canceling the meeting altogether.

In 2016, Kaepernick completed 59.2 percent of his passes for 2,241 yards and 16 touchdowns and four interceptions, while adding 468 yards rushing. Pro Football Focus had him rated as the No. 27 quarterback out of 36 qualifying players that year.
